Dear parents,
Jay Hind!
Here are ten important precautions to take during a heat wave, based on general guidelines:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
2. Avoid Direct Sunlight: Stay indoors during peak sunlight hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). If you must go out, wear a wide-brimmed hat and light, loose-fitting clothing.
3. Use Sunscreen: Apply a high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
4. Limit Strenuous Activities: Avoid heavy physical activities during the hottest parts of the day. Schedule exercise for cooler times like early morning or evening.
5. Cool Environment: Use fans, air conditioning, or take cool showers to keep your body temperature down. Spend time in air-conditioned places like shopping malls or public libraries if your home is not cool enough.
6. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on elderly family members, neighbors, and others who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
7. Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles: The temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly, leading to potentially fatal conditions.
8. Know the Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses: Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale, and clammy skin) and heat stroke (high body temperature, hot, red, dry, or damp skin, confusion).
9. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather reports and heat alerts issued by authorities.
10. Create a Heat Emergency Plan: Have a plan in place for what to do in case of a heat emergency, including identifying the coolest room in your home and knowing the location of the nearest cooling center.
